Baybayin Skate Series
“Just My Type”
The Baybayin series celebrates and cultivates the native Filipino script and culture through product design under a skatewear brand for Downcast, LLC. Exploration and usage of three fonts to create visual imagery and identity in apparel and merch designs.
In the designs, the native Filipino script and alphabet known as “Baybayin,” is infused with a Eurowestern black letter font to be seen as irony under the notion of Spaniards colonizing the indigenous tribes of the early Philippine Islands. Native flowers from the Island of the Philippines are used as visual imagery along with tribal tattoo patterns that were often used in the early days of Philippines’ tribes.
History and background of the native flowers are expressed as pure and interesting information to add depth and meanings of the Baybayin script are translated for educational purposes.

A re-branding concept of the Kyoto International Manga Museum of Japan.
Japan’s International Manga Museum’s branding has been outdated and a new, eccentric, fresh, dynamic, yet direct concept was needed to gain traction and attention for the new (and old) generations of manga readers.

Eccentric typography exercises of 5-6 fonts used in a playful manner of exploration through five different variations. A page can be seen in CSULB’s Fall 2022 BFA Graphic Design Show FTS magazine.

Ichigo Milkshake
Experimental Type Posters
Experimental typography exercises focused on manipulative and technical type - “Ichigo Milkshake” is the revival of international skateboarding, seen as more than a hobby, but a professional sport and with a community of all ages and a lifestyle built-in. This is the focus of the feel and look of urban skate in the streets of Shibuya, Japan.
Event posters which focus, encourage, and market the growing skate culture in urban Japan to align with the 2020 Olympics professional skateboarding team.
Ver 1: A narration of technical skill through fluid motion and grace amongst an urban landscape. Visually expressing ambiguity, dynamism, roughness, yet with fluidity in the use of typography and visual elements. The layering of type, the in-and-out focus is meant to create depth in the composition. A nod to 90’s grunge and skate aesthetic fusing with modern to futuristic aesthetics of today.
Ver 2: Follows more eccentricity, lightness, and playfulness, with the pink liquid smoke representing the fun colors of a strawberry milkshake behind the title or logo of the event in a whimsical manner. The visual language in this poster contains a blend of ambiguity, antithetical tension, and representational of the event.
Strawberry Milkshake is a standard, beginning, skateboarding trick to learn at all levels.
